Total solar eclipse 2027

Luxor · 2 August 2027 · about 6 minutes 22 seconds of totality

Luxor, Upper Egypt

On 2 August 2027 a total solar eclipse crosses Egypt. Luxor sits near the longest, most practical totality on Earth that day — about 6 minutes 22 seconds, with the sun almost overhead.

Partial phase begins around 11:40. Totality starts shortly after 13:02, maximum near 13:05, and the partial phase ends around 14:26 (local time).

Siwa, parts of the Red Sea coast and the Eastern Desert also see totality; Cairo sees a deep partial eclipse only.

Hotels in Luxor for this date will sell out. We are building viewing-base stays, Nile days before and after, certified solar viewers, and a quiet plan for heat, shade and photography.

Practical information

Monday 2 August 2027. Partial phase from about 11:40; totality shortly after 13:02 (maximum near 13:05); partial ends around 14:26, local time. Luxor is near the longest practical totality on Earth that day (~6 minutes 22 seconds), with the sun almost overhead.

August in Luxor is very hot — often well above 40°C. Shade, water, electrolyte sachets, a wide hat and a midday rest plan matter as much as the astronomy. We confirm the exact viewing area as local arrangements are published; expect a pre-dawn or early transfer, then a wait. Folding chairs and certified ISO solar viewers are part of our stays; do not look at partial phases without them. Totality is the only safe naked-eye window, and it ends abruptly — filters go back on immediately.

Hotels for this date sell out a year or more ahead. A deposit holds rooms. Photography: no unfiltered telephoto on the partial sun; we brief guests the evening before. Cairo sees only a deep partial eclipse — do not plan to “watch it from the capital”. Travel insurance should name the event and unused hotel nights if weather hides the sky (we cannot sell a clear totality).
