Egypt’s capital and the natural start of almost every journey: Islamic Cairo and the Citadel of Saladin, Coptic quarters along the old Nile, Khan el-Khalili if you want the souk, and the Grand Egyptian Museum — a collection that needs a morning, not a hurried hour. The city is dense, loud and generous; we keep hotel transfers private and leave afternoons open so it does not feel like a checklist. Most international flights land here; from Cairo you fly or take the train south to Luxor, or drive to Alexandria and Fayoum.

Giza Greater Cairo

The Giza plateau holds the last Wonder of the Ancient World still standing: the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, and the Sphinx. We come at a sensible hour for light and fewer coaches, add a panoramic stop, and treat a pyramid interior as optional — steep, hot, unforgettable for some, skippable for others. After dark the same landscape becomes a concert and festival stage (Starlight, Shakira, ARGY). Memphis and Saqqara sit a short drive south: the Old Kingdom before Giza, including the Step Pyramid of Djoser.

Alexandria Mediterranean coast

Three hours by private car from Cairo, Alexandria is a change of air: the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Qaitbay citadel on the site of the ancient lighthouse, a walk on the Corniche, and seafood if you want it. Optional catacombs at Kom el Shoqafa. It is not a second Cairo — it is a Mediterranean day, slower, windier, and worth a full outing rather than a tick. Overnight by the sea is possible if you prefer not to drive both ways in one day.

Fayoum Middle Egypt

An hour or so from Cairo, Fayoum is a soft desert day: Lake Qarun, the waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan, pottery villages, and — if you stretch the day — Wadi El Hitan, the UNESCO whale valley. It is not a pyramid morning; it is water, dunes and a slower landscape for travellers who have already done Giza or who want a rest between museum days. October to April is kindest.

Luxor Upper Egypt

Often called the world’s greatest open-air museum: Karnak and Luxor Temple on the East Bank; the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s terraces and the Colossi of Memnon on the West. A dawn balloon is optional and weather-dependent. This is also where Nile cruises embark, and where totality on 2 August 2027 lasts more than six minutes — hotels for that date book out early. We split East and West Banks so neither becomes a blur, and we start the West Bank early to keep heat and coaches at a distance.

Aswan Upper Egypt

Aswan is slower than Luxor: the Nile is wider, the light softer, Nubian villages sit on the banks. Philae — the temple of Isis, moved stone by stone when the High Dam rose — is the essential visit, reached by a short motorboat. A felucca hour around Elephantine at sunset is the simplest beautiful evening in Egypt. Abu Simbel, Ramses II’s temples on Lake Nasser, is a dawn extra by flight or convoy. The Unfinished Obelisk and a High Dam viewpoint complete a first day if you want the set.

Red Sea Eastern coast

After the temples, the coast: Hurghada for easy flights and island days (Giftun), Marsa Alam for quieter reefs and a longer transfer. Snorkelling, a first dive, a spa, or simply the sea after Karnak. Cultural days stay private; sea days are yours unless you ask for a boat or a desert evening. Reef-safe sunscreen matters in the marine parks. Internal flights from Luxor or Aswan, or a road transfer from Hurghada, close a classic circuit without rushing the last night.

Sinai Sinai Peninsula

The peninsula between two seas: Dahab for a slower reef town than Sharm, Ras Mohammed and the Blue Hole for confident swimmers, and inland the monastery of St Catherine with an optional pre-dawn climb of Mount Sinai. Dress codes apply at the monastery; the summit is cold before sunrise even in spring. Check current travel advice for your nationality before you book Sinai. We usually enter via Sharm El Sheikh airport, or by air from Cairo.

White Desert Western Desert

Between Bahariya and Farafra, about a four-hour drive from Cairo, the White Desert is a national park of chalk: wind-cut mushrooms, the chicken rock, and a floor that turns almost blue-white at noon. The point of going is not a temple — it is a 4x4 day, sunset among the formations, and a night camp under a hard sky. Crystal Mountain and the Black Desert sit on the same road. Dress for wind and a cold desert night; bathrooms at camp are simple. Best from October to April — high summer is possible but harsh.

From White Desert

Siwa & Western Desert Western Desert

Near the Libyan border, Siwa is a Berber oasis of palms, salt lakes you can float in, the oracle temple of Amun, and the ruined fortress of Shali. One night in the dunes of the Great Sand Sea is the point of going this far: a sky without cities. The road from Cairo is long; a flight to Marsa Matruh shortens it. Dress modestly in the oasis; alcohol is not part of the culture. Best from October to April — high summer is harsh.
