Jewels of Egypt: Cairo & Nile Cruise

A private meeting in the arrivals hall at Cairo International — your name, not a group sign — then a car to the hotel. We choose Nile-side or Zamalek for the view and a calmer evening, not for a checklist of monuments.

The rest of the day is deliberately empty. If you land in daylight, a first walk along the river is enough; if you land late, we protect your sleep. There is no temple on arrival day.

We confirm tomorrow’s start time the same evening, including how early Giza needs to be in summer. Bottled water is in the car from the first transfer.

Morning on the Giza plateau at a sensible hour — earlier in summer, a little later in winter when the light is kinder. The three pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, time with the Sphinx that is not a photograph from a moving bus, and a panoramic stop away from the densest coaches.

A pyramid interior is optional: steep, hot, unforgettable for some, skippable for others. We never put it on the mandatory list. After the plateau, we continue south to Memphis, the first capital, and Saqqara, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser begins stone architecture in Egypt.

Lunch is included on this day. We aim to be back in Cairo before the worst of the evening traffic. Comfortable shoes, a hat and water matter more here than anywhere else on a first circuit.

A focused morning in the Grand Egyptian Museum — the pieces that matter, not every gallery — then transfer to the domestic terminal. Passport names for the Cairo–Luxor flight are needed 72 hours in advance; we already have them from your booking.

Afternoon flight to Luxor. On landing, either check in to a hotel or embark the Nile boat, according to the cabin we have held. Welcome dinner on board if you are sailing; a quiet hotel supper if you are not.

Luxor is hotter than Cairo. We start temples tomorrow at a human hour, not at 7 p.m. after a flight. Sleep on the river if you can — the first night on board is the adjustment.

Karnak at opening — the hypostyle hall before the coaches thicken, the sacred lake, the processional axis of ancient Thebes. Your Egyptologist will not try to name every ram-headed sphinx; the point is the scale and the light.

Late afternoon at Luxor Temple, when the stone warms to gold. This is the silhouette you will recognise on eclipse day if you are here in August 2027; it is worth seeing in ordinary sun first.

Overnight on board or at the hotel. Tomorrow is the West Bank, which starts earlier and asks more of the legs.

West Bank in the morning: Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, the Colossi. Standard tombs included; the famous extras only if you have asked. Then back on board.

The boat sails south through the Esna lock — a slow, noisy, oddly absorbing hour. Tea on deck. This is the Nile doing the work that coaches cannot.

Dinner on board. Tomorrow is Edfu, usually by horse carriage from the quay, then Kom Ombo in the afternoon light.

If you are on a cruise: the Temple of Horus at Edfu in the morning — one of Egypt’s best-preserved, a complete Ptolemaic sanctuary, usually a short carriage ride from the landing. The reliefs are sharp; the visit is about an hour if we do not rush.

Afternoon at Kom Ombo, the double temple for Sobek the crocodile god and Haroeris. The Crocodile Museum is next door if you want it. Then hours on deck at golden hour — villages, fields, the river doing what it has done for millennia.

If you are travelling overland instead, we make the same temples with a private car and a calmer timetable. Either way, this day is the river, not a third museum stacked on Luxor.

Philae, the temple of Isis, reached by a short motorboat. The whole island was moved stone by stone when the High Dam drowned the original site — UNESCO’s rescue is part of the story, not a footnote.

A High Dam viewpoint and the Unfinished Obelisk in the granite quarry complete the set if you want them. Late afternoon, a felucca hour around Elephantine if the wind allows — tea on board, no soundtrack but the river. A Nubian village is optional, never obligatory.

Aswan is slower than Luxor. We keep the afternoon from filling up. Abu Simbel can be added at dawn tomorrow by flight or convoy — tell us before you travel, not at 9 p.m. in the lobby.

A free morning on the water, or the dawn excursion to Abu Simbel — Ramses II and Nefertari on Lake Nasser, UNESCO’s rescue, four seated colossi. We prefer the short flight when it fits (more time at the temples, less road); the convoy remains the classic, cheaper option.

Return late morning by air or afternoon by road. The rest of the day is rest: the boat, a spa, or a second felucca. Do not stack another temple on this afternoon if you have done the dawn.

Overnight on board in Aswan, or in a hotel if you disembark. Tomorrow may be a flight north or the coast.

Breakfast on board. Optional Abu Simbel at dawn if it was booked. Then disembarkation and a private transfer to Aswan airport or your onward hotel.

If your international flight is late, we can hold a day-use room in Cairo after the Aswan–Cairo hop. We do not leave you in a departures hall for six hours without saying so in advance.

Tips for the boat staff are customary and listed in your documents; they are not included in our price.

Breakfast at the hotel, then a private transfer to Cairo International timed to your flight, not to a group departure. We stay with you until check-in when connections are tight.

If you are continuing — Luxor, a Nile cruise, the Red Sea, or a quieter Fayoum day — we connect the same car and the same briefing. Arrival-day rest is behind you; today is only logistics.

Keep passport, visa approval and insurance certificate in your cabin bag. Egypt’s airports are orderly but slow at peak hours.
