Grand Egypt: Nile & Red Sea

A private meeting in the arrivals hall at Cairo International — your name, not a group sign — then a car to the hotel. We choose Nile-side or Zamalek for the view and a calmer evening, not for a checklist of monuments.

The rest of the day is deliberately empty. If you land in daylight, a first walk along the river is enough; if you land late, we protect your sleep. There is no temple on arrival day.

We confirm tomorrow’s start time the same evening, including how early Giza needs to be in summer. Bottled water is in the car from the first transfer.

The Giza plateau first, while the air is still reasonable: Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure, the Sphinx, and a viewpoint that is not the coach park. Your Egyptologist sets the pace — this is not a race around the perimeter fence.

A pyramid interior remains your choice. In the afternoon we drive south to Saqqara and the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the Old Kingdom before the tourist postcard. If time and energy allow, a noble’s tomb adds colour that Giza no longer has.

Lunch is included. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon. The evening is free: rest, or an optional Sound & Light on another night if you want the plateau after dark.

Morning in the Grand Egyptian Museum — a collection that needs hours, not a corridor dash. Tutankhamun, the royal boats, and the galleries you actually care about, chosen with your Egyptologist rather than every hall in sequence.

Afternoon in historic Cairo: the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. Shoulders and knees covered inside. Khan el-Khalili is optional if you want the souk; it is easy to skip if you have had enough stone and people.

Return to the hotel in the late afternoon. The evening is free. Drink bottled water; Cairo’s tap water is not for visitors.

Morning flight from Cairo to Luxor. The East Bank is the day’s work: Karnak, the largest temple complex in Egypt — hypostyle hall, sacred lake, the scale of Thebes — walked at a human pace, not a flag-and-sprint.

Toward evening, Luxor Temple, when the stone holds the light and the heat has dropped a degree. Overnight in a Luxor hotel or embark the Nile boat, according to what we have booked.

Dinner on board if you are cruising. Modest dress is still wise around the temples; shoulders can wait for the boat deck after sunset.

An early start keeps heat and coaches at a distance. The Valley of the Kings: standard tombs are included; Seti I, Tutankhamun or Nefertari are extras we offer, we do not impose — they have quotas, stairs and a separate ticket.

Hatshepsut’s terraces at Deir el-Bahari, then the Colossi of Memnon on the way back. Photography rules inside tombs change; your guide will say what is allowed that morning.

Return to the hotel or boat for a quieter afternoon. A dawn balloon can replace or precede this morning on another day — weather dependent, rebooked or refunded if the sky closes.

If you are on a cruise: the Temple of Horus at Edfu in the morning — one of Egypt’s best-preserved, a complete Ptolemaic sanctuary, usually a short carriage ride from the landing. The reliefs are sharp; the visit is about an hour if we do not rush.

Afternoon at Kom Ombo, the double temple for Sobek the crocodile god and Haroeris. The Crocodile Museum is next door if you want it. Then hours on deck at golden hour — villages, fields, the river doing what it has done for millennia.

If you are travelling overland instead, we make the same temples with a private car and a calmer timetable. Either way, this day is the river, not a third museum stacked on Luxor.

Philae, the temple of Isis, reached by a short motorboat. The whole island was moved stone by stone when the High Dam drowned the original site — UNESCO’s rescue is part of the story, not a footnote.

A High Dam viewpoint and the Unfinished Obelisk in the granite quarry complete the set if you want them. Late afternoon, a felucca hour around Elephantine if the wind allows — tea on board, no soundtrack but the river. A Nubian village is optional, never obligatory.

Aswan is slower than Luxor. We keep the afternoon from filling up. Abu Simbel can be added at dawn tomorrow by flight or convoy — tell us before you travel, not at 9 p.m. in the lobby.

Road transfer or a short flight to Hurghada or Marsa Alam, according to the resort we have held. Check-in, the sea, a first swim. Cultural days are behind you; this afternoon is rest, not another temple.

Half board from tonight. Reef-safe sunscreen from the first dip — the marine parks notice ordinary cream.

We do not fill the evening unless you ask for a desert outing. Sleep to the Red Sea is the point of coming this far after Karnak.

A free day. Snorkel from the hotel jetty, a trial dive if you swim well and pass the medical form, or simply the pool. We do not add a coach tour unless you ask.

A desert evening — quad or 4x4 and a Bedouin-style dinner — can be booked for late afternoon. Tell us if you prefer 4x4 only; some camps ask for a licence on quads.

Half board. Drink more water than you think. The Red Sea sun is honest even in winter.

Optional Giftun island from Hurghada: a national-park boat, two snorkel stops, lunch on board or on the sand. Private boats for families who prefer not to share. Or a spa morning and an unstructured afternoon.

From Marsa Alam the reefs are often quieter and the transfer longer — we say which coast you have in the confirmation, not as a surprise at breakfast.

Two weeks of temples have the right to breathe here. We will not invent an itinerary to fill the silence.

Your last full day by the water. Repeat a reef, sleep late, or a short desert viewpoint at sunset. Pack in the evening if tomorrow’s flight is early; we confirm the airport time tonight.

A packed breakfast can be arranged. Resort check-out hours are rigid; we work around them with a day-use room when the flight is brutal.

Half board. The temples are already photographs. Let the sea be the last ordinary day.

Breakfast and transfer to Hurghada airport, or an internal flight / road via Cairo if that matches your international ticket. We stay until check-in when timing is tight.

If you flew into Cairo two weeks ago, the return may not be the same airport — we check the ticket, not the habit.

Keep reef-safe cream out of the hold if it is a liquid over the limit; buy a small one for the last swim instead.
